Focus on connected mobility: X4ITS - Technical workshop in Ljubljana promotes exchange on C-ITS
The EU-funded X4ITS project focuses primarily on the Europe-wide harmonisation of traffic and information services, as well as the implementation and introduction of cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS). Part of the project involves close cross-border cooperation to improve traffic flow and road safety within the participating countries.
As part of the project, the public event “C-ITS in Slovenia” was organized on October 14, 2025, where not only the project itself was presented to an international audience, but above all, the developments of C-ITS in an urban context were discussed.
The event facilitated an exchange between experts from the fields of mobility and infrastructure, as well as representatives of public institutions, to discuss joint strategies and strengthen technical and organisational cooperation at the international level.
The meeting, which was opened by the Slovenian partners, began with contributions from the State Secretary, the Deputy Mayor of Ljubljana, and leading representatives of the Slovenian motorway company. They emphasised the importance of international cooperation and digital innovation for the future of mobility.
Martin Böhm, Technical Director of AustriaTech, and experts from Germany, Czechia, Slovenia, and Austria presented the current status of C-ITS technology implementation in their respective cities and countries, as well as on the European level. They showed how diverse and challenging the approaches to integrating cooperative transport systems are – and how these contribute jointly to a safer, more efficient, and connected mobility in Europe.
The concluding internal technical workshop focused on the exchange of expertise on the framework conditions and fields of application for C-ITS. The aim of the technical workshop was to further promote exchange between high-level road transport networks and urban mobility areas. In particular, the advantages of the technologies for cities and municipalities were highlighted – from increased road safety to more efficient processes and more sustainable road transport in Europe.
The fourth X4ITS Steering Committee Meeting took place on October 13, 2025. The Slovenian partners took the opportunity to present the current progress of the project in their country and share their experiences from the implementation.
The meeting focused in particular on the topic of evaluation. This plays an important role, especially in interaction with the European Commission, as the effectiveness and added value of the implemented services, for example in C-ITS use cases, must be demonstrated. Experts from the partner projects MATIS, C-Roads, and MERIDIAN presented their methodological approaches, laying the foundation for a lively discussion.
Finally, various project management topics were discussed, including adjustments to the framework agreement and ongoing reviews by the European Commission. The evening was rounded off with a guided tour of the centre of Ljubljana, with a special focus on sustainable urban development and mobility transformation in the Slovenian capital.
