With more than 3,500 visitors, the Transport Research Arena 2018 in Vienna was a complete success. The participants, who came from 65 different countries and all continents of the world, were offered a wide range of scientific insights, showcases and networking opportunities. Europe's largest transport research conference devoted twelve thematic areas to all relevant topics from transport and mobility with a focus on digitisation. In over 650 scientific papers, the authors focused on innovations, opportunities and challenges of transport infrastructure, environmental and energy efficiency, safety in mobility or smart urban mobility.

The TRA2018 was opened by EU Commissioner Violeta Bulc and Transport Minister Norbert Hofer, who repeatedly emphasised the importance of the TRA2018 for European progress in the transport, mobility and transport sector. Particular attention has been paid on efforts to achieve gender balance in the sector. Only 22% of women in the transport sector illustrate the unbalanced gender distribution. Led by Commissioer Bulc and Minister Hofer, a specific declaration for equal opportunities for women and men in transport was signed. The declaration is an initiative of the Platform for Change - Women in Transport, which serves as a forum for open discussion and exchange of best practices.

At the 7,000 sqm exhibition and the Interactive Zone, Austrian and international companies, institutions and start-ups had the opportunity to present their innovative projects and technological solutions. The Interactive Zone, created for the first time for the TRA2018, created a framework in which visitors could experience and try out research results and innovations first-hand. On the stage of the Networking Zone, interactive formats such as start-up pitches, award ceremonies, lectures and presentations complemented the scientific conference programme.
